michelle was just quoting from president obama's remarks last week. i would agree with her that his remarks reflect a positive shift if they are implemented. i would also add that we have seen remarks from the president and from other high-ranking u.s. officials in the past that would have suggested a shift in u.s. policy that i think would have been some of the right shifts. tamara referenced the speech in may of 2011. in that speech, the president declared that support for democratic principles in the middle east would no longer be a secondary priority. they would be supported by all of the political and strategic and economic tools available to the united states. i think that was exactly the right shift that was needed in the spring of 2011. i think sadly we haven't seen that reflected at all in u.s. policy since then. and i would fear that the remarks last week by president obama might the only a sort of repetition of the administration and the president saying the right thing but really being unwilling to back those up by policy changes. if so, i
